about

First of all: at the end of the track, you hear some talking, most likely. That is me saying to myself basically that I had forgotten to use the 2nd microphone. I just left it in there, because it seemed to blend in well enough with the track
This track (and Xaphoon #2, along with Cloud Before You Were Born) features the wonderful invention of Brian Wittman, who I've gotten to know, recently. The Xaphoon en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xaphoon allows for one to play a reed instrument that can get a range of sounds (at a basic level, the plastic one I've got is closer to a clarinet. However, it's got some bight to it and crosses over into an alto sax range...sometimes, even a trumpet sound. However, I believe the muted trumpet sound occurs more when I either have a cracked reed, or, I'm really out-of-breath!) I hope to have some longer tracks, along with some more melodic material, as opposed to textures. As a percussionist, visual person/synesthete, I am really drawn to the textures, at this point. There has been a lot of progress since I first got the instrument from a very close friend in April. This was tracked in early May, I believe. At the moment, I'm trying to manipulate the sound manually to play some more "in between" tones, so that I can play with tracks like track 2 on this album. I didn't want to manipulate the pitch using the filters, because it sounds bad/obvious. Otherwise, there would be a lot more xaphoon. Stay tuned in the future, though! Also, thanks, Brian, for your insights on music and on life. Very glad to have become acquainted with you. Therefore, this album is partially dedicated to you!

*This is nitpicking a bit, but, the Xaphoon part was recorded on an internal mic, as I was battling a sinus problem and didn't expect to like the outcome. Since the opposite happened, I tried to clean it up as much as I could and then recorded the upright bass/re-did the drum part using a high-quality microphone. It's hopefully not too noticeable a difference! That's why this collection of releases is titled "Multitracked Jazz..." as an emphasis.
Additional note: The Tiny Album, which you can find here, on Bandcamp, also features a splash of Xaphoon, along with the track Chasing Away Anxiety. If you want to here some great playing, though, check out Wittman's site, which has some video footage xaphoon.com
